Manufacturing Engineer

Cognition Energy is an innovative and disruptive engineering start-up that uses science led development to deliver high performance battery products and services. We develop unique battery test equipment (CellPods)  and carry out contract testing for external clients. Founded by 4 people, of which 3 are Imperial College academics, Cognition's long term goal is to help the world switch to a 100% renewable future!  


This is an exciting opportunity for a manufacturing engineer to take ownership of the CellPod pilot line and turn it into a full scale production cell capable of meeting our growing customer orders. You will be working with our multidisciplinary engineering team to not just optimise the production of CellPods but to influence the design decisions for future development. 


We are looking for an adaptable, talented and creative engineer to join the team and become a part of our growing company and from the ground up, design, create and implement a world class manufacturing line.


We don’t expect you to have all of the skills below and are committed to providing the training and support to develop your ability. 

What you’ll have:

  • Degree in mechanical/manufacturing engineering, or equivalent experience 

  • 3 - 5 years of relevant industry experience (Ideally in electro-mechanical products)

  • Experience in implementing, managing and optimising manufacturing processes and production lines

  • Experience implementing and managing manufacturing quality systems 

    • Quality tools such as Kaizen, 8D, 5S, Six Sigma etc...

  • Experience working with & implementing ERP/MRP systems 

What you’ll do: 

  • Work with the current production staff to identify the areas of improvement

  • Work closely with the operations lead to ensure production targets are achievable 

  • Specify and oversee the fitout of the production line, designing in the optimum material flows for production

  • Work on the implementation and management of the ERP/MRP system 

  • Propose potential production investments required to improve production capabilities

  • Drive implementation of LEAN and CI practices across the organisation

  • Lead PFMEA and capability/repeatability improvement activities

  • Lead projects to improve quality, cost and efficiency against tangible results

Cognitions office and labs are based in a beautiful countryside setting, with free parking, just outside Didcot, Oxfordshire. Local amenities include local shops, a pub and easy access to the A34. 

Additional Information:

  • Full time position

  • Monday - Friday , 9am - 5pm or 8am - 4pm (flexible) , 40hrs per week  (including lunch & breaks) 

  • Visa sponsorship not available
