Electronic Engineer

Cognition Energy is an innovative and disruptive engineering start-up that uses science led development to deliver high performance battery products and services. At Cognition we develop unique battery test equipment (CellPods) and carry out contract testing for external clients. Founded by 4 people, of which 3 are Imperial College academics, Cognition's long term goal is to help the world switch to a 100% renewable future!

 

This is an exciting opportunity for an electronic engineer to work on the current development of the CellPod and in the future Cognitions Advanced Battery. The role will be hands-on and require the design and prototyping of R&D electronic components. These will range from small scale, high precision calibration equipment to production ready battery management systems. You will be working closely with our electronic engineer that has over 30 years of experience in bespoke hardware and software development.

We don’t expect you to have all of the skills below and are committed to providing the training and support to develop your ability.

 

What you’ll have:

  • Degree in Electronics Engineering, or equivalent experience

  • 1-2 years of experience in PCB hardware design, schematics and testing

 

What you’ll do:

  • Design and iterate bespoke electronics

  • Design of digital and analogue electronics

  • Schematic capture and PCB layout

  • Hands on prototyping, testing and rework of PCBs

  • Work with the wider engineering team to integrate your electrical designs with the overall product

  • Design production ready components

  • Design compliance to EMC & safety standards

  • Supporting certification activities and documentation

  • Designing test equipment

  • For in-house calibration and production ready parts

  • Support of other engineering tasks within the company

 

Even better if you have:

  • Experience in temperature, current and voltage sensing

  • Basic mechanical design skills, e.g Eagle, Solidworks

  • Modelling in LTSpice or similar

  • Knowledge of battery management systems

  • Working knowledge of CAN bus and other serial protocols

  • Experience of the Keil uVision IDE

  • Testing and coding in embedded C to MISRA-C rules

  • Reliability and safety analysis - SIL, FTA and FMEA

Location:

Additional Information:

  • Full time position

  • Mon - Friday, 9am - 5pm or 8am - 4pm (flexible), 40hrs per week (including lunch & breaks)
