Mechanical Design Engineer
Cognition Energy is looking for a mechanical design engineer, to grow its small but dedicated team for product development. This is an interesting and varied role which would see your involvement in the full process of product R&D, from concept, design, prototype, testing to manufacture.
Cognition Energy provides a testing service to characterise battery cells for external clients such as automotives, gigafactories and pack developers. We also develop CellPods, which are unique temperature control cell test chambers. Cognition's long term goal is to help the world switch to a 100% renewable future!

What you’ll do:

Design and develop bespoke cell testing fixtures for use internally and for sale to customers as a new product range.

Support further development of CellPods, our high accuracy test equipment, identifying design improvements and developing future generations of the product.

Work closely with our battery testing team and customers to define and capture design specifications and requirements.

Creating 3-D CAD parts and assemblies using SolidWorks.

Prototype and build your designs in our workshop using 3D printers, Haas CNC mill and other machine tools.

Testing and validation of designs for functionality and ease of manufacturing (DFM).

Creating 2-D CAD detail and assembly drawings and associated BOMs for in-house and external manufacturing.
What you’ll have:
-
Degree in related science or engineering field, with experience in mechanical design, or 2+ years of experience in design engineering.

Proven experience in designing and developing components into working devices and products.

Analytical and methodical approach to carry out design verification tests and providing solutions for continuous design improvements.

Experience using CAD software (SolidWorks or similar).

Knowledge of rapid prototyping and manufacturing processes (3D printing, CNC machining, etc)

Solid understanding of design and engineering principles (mechanics, stress analysis, heat transfer, etc)

Excellent communication skills, and ability to work collaboratively and independently within a cross-functional team environment.

Experience bringing new products to market.

Basic understanding of product integration and functional safety.

Experience within the battery industry.

Additional Information:

Full time position (on-site) Monday - Friday (9am - 5pm or 8am - 4pm (flexible)). 37.5 hrs per week
