Battery Test Engineer

Cognition Energy is recruiting for a cell test engineer with a minimum of two years’ experience to join its team as it expands its cell testing facility. This is an interesting and varied role which would see your involvement in the full testing process, including liaising with customers to define test programmes, setting tests up in the lab, and monitoring and assessing data, all while supporting in the day-to-day operation of the test facility.

Cognition Energy provides a testing service to characterise battery cells for external clients from R&D scale to gigafactories, automotives and pack developers. We also develop CellPods, which are unique temperature control cell test chambers. Cognition's long term goal is to help the world switch to a 100% renewable future!

What you’ll do:

  • Be an integral part of day-to-day testing operations in Cognition’s battery test laboratory.

  • Execute (set up, monitor, analyse data from and report the results of) both internal and external battery test programmes.

  • Assess test requests and provide technical advice and guidance to customers, then work with them to prepare test plans and deliver test data to their requirements.

  • Ensure that battery testing at Cognition is executed efficiently while maintaining high quality data outputs.

  • Help to define and implement Cognition’s battery testing processes and procedures, develop internal test specifications and ensure health and safety compliance during battery testing.

  • You will have the opportunity to play a role in company development and strategy.

 

What you’ll have:

  • At least two years’ experience in battery or cell testing.

  • Hands-on experience operating one or more types of cycler - we use Maccor, Neware, Basytec and Ivium in our facility, but experience with other manufacturers counts.

  • A good understanding of safe cell handling.

  • Confidence to safely use hand tools in a restricted environment (a thermal chamber), and handling cells/fixtures which may weigh up to 10kg.

  • Strong analytical and judgement skills, including the ability to troubleshoot and advise on solutions in the context of cell testing.

  • Good communication skills, able to discuss complex test plans with customers and colleagues and present the results.

  • The ability to work in a small team and take responsibility for your day to day tasks, working with the team to hit customer deadlines.

Even better if you have:

  • Experience with safety testing and/or pack testing.

  • Experience managing and analysing datasets using scripting/programming languages, ideally with Matlab.
